There are so many bodies buried above ground
These vibrant looking bodies talking and walking around
These bodies that we’re all so used to seeing
Blending in so well we don’t even notice they’re not breathing
You exchange pleasantries
You smile and you say “hey how are you?”
He says “oh hey, I’m ok”
Hey says “you?”
You say say “same. Well have a good day” before you part ways
But he hasn’t had a good day in days
This go round
And she goes to work with not a hair out of place
You would never guess from the look on her face
That she dreamed of jumping just before breakfast
But couldn’t be bothered to climb all those stairs
They’re alive but they aren’t living
Their lungs are filling
With air
but they can’t breathe
You can’t even see it
It’s so obvious that it’s invisible
Somehow you still think they’re invincible
When just yesterday made today seem incomprehensible
It feels unending
As fast as her heart beats
You’d think she was training for a triathlon
But she’s just trying to get out of bed
As much as he talks
You’d think you’d think he has it all figured out
But he’s just drowning out the voices in his head
Drowning on dry land
Steeping in sadness like cup of hot tea
Asphyxiating on anxiety
We’d just like to breathe
