Reminder of Humanity

You and I don't look the same
But you and I are nearly identical
We need air to breathe
We need light to see
If the sun had gone dark
And all power given way
We'd never think we weren't, indeed the same
Our mothers, our fathers
Our siblings, our friends
Will mourn us with fervor
Should would meet our ends
If our lives were layed out side by side
They'd tell stories of joy, pain, and loves demised
We have worries
We have cares
We have secrets
We have pride
Hopes, goals, aspirations and dreams
A longing for more than our basic needs
We've had triumphs and defeats
We've made some mistakes
We've realized some things when it was all too late
We've made plenty of memories
Even a few we can't recall
You and I aren't very different at all
The devil is in the details
To tear us apart
Yet the blood in my body could be pumped by your heart
We could save each other
In more ways than one
When we remember unity is more powerful than guns
Why not see yourself
When you look at a stranger
When faced with mistreatment
You feel the same anger
Or hurt, or sad disappointment
You and I have plenty in common
You need not look hard or far to find it
Or experiences color our opinions
But our humanness makes us the same
